AIHI Tile Project

In partnership with the University of Washington, Penn State University, and the American Indian Housing Initiative, Stephanie helped construct the Northern Cheyenne Demonstration Home. Portions of the interior of this straw bale building were clad in hand made tiles that were painted by the children of the community. These tiles were installed into the thick Entry walls, window sills, and in a 'truth window', so that the children could see first hand how they can positively affect their built environment. Truth windows are important because they not only provide a place for moisture to escape in an aesthetically pleasing way, but they allow the viewer to see the 'truth' about the materials used to construct the building. It was important to fabricate a window that utilized one of the art tiles, while still in keeping with the rustic style of the building.
