REI Santa Monica
Previously a Toys R Us, REI maintained its commitment to environmental preservation by preserving and re-using the majority of the existing structure. In keeping with REI's fashionable and techy product line, the building was stripped clean of all old interior finishes, leaving the functional components of the building exposed. Abundant skylights let in natural light, while the open plan and central staircase allow for easy way-finding to all merchandise. The concrete floor and steel structure serve as a fitting backdrop to climbing gear and hanging bicycles. Situated in the busy shopping district of Santa Monica Blvd just 4 blocks from the beach, this store and its expansive windows are an enticement for window shoppers and tourists alike.
